RECOGNISING YOURSELF AS A CARER

When someone lives with dementia, it can affect the family and friends around them – especially if those people have caring responsibilities. Changes in your relationships and roles can be difficult to accept, but while things may be different, you can still maintain meaningful connections. Caring for a person with dementia can be physically and mentally demanding, but you do not have to cope on your own. There is support out there for you. Such as help and support with care, daily living, legal and financial matters and staying independent.

West Sussex County Council Connect to Support can offer advice and support.

LOOKING AFTER A FRIEND OR RELATIVE...

…who has dementia can be particularly challenging. It can lead to feelings of guilt, sadness, confusion, or anger. Unlike other conditions, it can be difficult to share these feelings with someone with dementia, leaving you feeling very isolated.

It is important to acknowledge these feelings and to remember that there is no right or wrong way to feel. If you are feeling anxious, low, or struggling to cope, talk to your GP who can let you know about the help and support available to you.

Carers Support West Sussex Carers Groups  these groups can be an effective way to get support from other carers who understand what you are going through and can share their own experiences. Most groups meet regularly and may include talks from speakers, leisure activities, trips, and some time to just sit and chat.

It is useful to be aware of the Mental Capacity Act as you will need to make some important decisions and this is better done before dementia progresses.  In addition to a Will it is imperative to appoint someone to hold Power of Attorney. You may also want to do this for the direct carer too.  This is something that can be done on line yourself via the Office of the Public Guardian website, or you can use/contact a solicitor of choice.  If you need assistance finding a solicitor the Society of Later Life Advsiors will be of help.

“The group I attend is very helpful. I like to be with people who seem to be dealing with the same sorts of problems as myself. It makes me feel less isolated.”

“It is good to know people are aware of my situation and are there to offer advice and support”

“It is about knowing that you are not alone in your role as a carer, and that you can always access help/advice”
