World Book Day

World Book Day

World Book Day takes place on 7 March but what is it? It is simply all about promoting a love of books and reading. Although aimed at children and young people, it is a great opportunity for us all to think about books and reading and how we can all continue to enjoy these and a great opportunity for me to tell you what your library can do for you!

Reading or listening to books can reduce stress, help us escape, learn and empathise and bring us happiness and joy! How can your library help you carry on doing these?  We have books (of course!), audiobooks on CD and an eLibrary  of eBooks, eAudiobooks, eNewspapers and eMagazines. We also have other resources such as our wonderful Reminiscence Packs on over 25 different topics, which have objects to look at and handle, music CDs, photos, books or jigsaws. All of these are FREE to borrow!

If you are concerned that you might not remember to return things on time and may be charged, please don’t worry! We can change your membership to our Memory Management category which means that there are no overdue charges – just ask library staff.

If you can’t come to the library for any reason, including caring responsibilities, our DBS-checked volunteers can bring it to you with our Home Library Direct  service. Again, ask library staff or apply online.

Libraries can offer you more than books and reading too, such as our free regular activities, including our dementia-friendly Melody for the Mind singing groups at Broadfield, Chichester, Southwick and Steyning libraries, with a new one starting at Horsham library in May. Everyone is welcome to these.

Happily, World Book Night falls in our Wellbeing Month , when we promote all the library services, resources and activities that support wellbeing, including those for people living with dementia. Books and reading are for everyone and your libraries are here to help you carry on enjoying these. We have gathered all our information about our resources for people living with dementia into one place on our website to make it easier to find. Please have a look to find our more.

Information about all the above and much more can be found on our West Sussex Libraries website. Have a look at all we can offer – you may be surprised!
